Rochester is opening up growth opportunities
for small and mid-sized shops with a new entry-level server in the
Model 810 line.
“This lower-CPW entry point
into the Model 810 provides greater flexibility for customers, particularly
for small and medium-sized businesses that don’t want to be
at the top of the Model 800 line but do need a lower entry price
to get into the Model 810 line,” says Ian Jarman, iSeries
product manager, IBM, Rochester, MN.
Model 810 with lower processor
feature: One highlight of the latest announcements out
of Rochester is a new low entry point into the Model 810 Standard
and Enterprise Editions. The 750-CPW machine has the same main storage
and I/O maximums of the existing Model 810, and has the ability
to be upgraded up to and including the 2-way, 2,700-CPW Model 810.
Pricing for the new iSeries Model
810 server 2465 (#0868) starts at $9,000. For Standard Edition (#7404),
customers will pay an additional $2,000. The price of the Enterprise
Edition (#7406), with unlimited 5250 interactive, jumps to $46,000.
Upgrade paths into this new Model
810 are from the lower processor points on the Model 720 and Model
820. With this latest announcement, IBM has also included additional
upgrade paths from Model 720, 730, 820, and 830 into the Models
810 and 825.
“All the new upgrade paths
into the Model 810 really benefit customers with existing Model
720 or 730 machines because they have more options and will have
to upgrade before October 7, 2003,” says Jarman.
Prepaid option for Capacity
Upgrade on Demand: Customers taking advantage of Capacity
Upgrade on Demand on the Models 825, 870, and 890 now have new prepay
options. Shops can pay for 30 processor days before activation at
a 25% discount off the regular price.
“This is an extension of
the On/Off Capacity Upgrade on Demand, but it gives added budgeting
flexibility to customers using the temporary capacity. For example,
a retail customer that knows they will see a spike over the holidays
can purchase capacity ahead of time for less,” says Jarman.
Model 800 Editions have
added software: Both the Standard and the Advanced Editions
of the Model 800 have been enhanced with the addition of the DB2
Query Manager and the SQL Developers Toolkit, as well as the Performance
Tools.
SAN solution flexibility:
IBM has announced increased support for two McData switches (4500
and 3232) and two directors (6064 and 6140), improved performance
for Enterprise Storage Server (Shark) customers, and improved tape
backup performance with support for LTO 2 in 3582 and 3583 Tape
Libraries.
Enhanced database performance
and migration: An enhanced self- optimizing SQL query environment
within DB2/400 improves the performance of complex queries, like
those utilized in Business Intelligence and CRM analytics storage,
by two to five times. The DB2 Migration Toolkit for Oracle simplifies
data and application transition from an Oracle database to DB2.
“In V5R2, we enhanced the
database. Here we went back in and opened up those enhancements
for different kinds of queries,” says Jarman.
Extended middleware options
for Linux: IBM has extended its middleware options for
Linux on the iSeries with the announcement of DB2 UDB V8 for Linux.
This version will be available for Linux running on the iSeries
on May 23, 2003.
“This is the same code base
running on Windows and Unix platforms today. We plan to follow this
with a version of WebSphere for Linux later. Our strategy is to
encourage the growth of robust commercial applications on Linux,”
says Jarman.
VXA 80 GB tape drives:
The new VXA technology tape drives can store 80 GB of data on a
230-meter cartridge at a 6 MB/s data transfer rate.
